What is chokuto sword?

The chokuto sword is a type of Japanese sword that dates back to the Kofun period (3rd to 6th century). It is characterized by its straight blade, unlike the curved blades of later Japanese swords such as the katana.

The chokuto sword is thought to have been influenced by Chinese swords and was considered more of a utilitarian weapon rather than a ceremonial one. It was used by ancient Japanese warriors and samurai as a slashing and thrusting weapon.

Chokuto swords were typically made of iron and were often shorter than later Japanese swords, ranging from around 50 to 70 centimeters in length. They were also typically lighter in weight compared to later swords.

While not as famous or popular as the katana, the chokuto sword still holds historical significance in Japanese sword-making and martial arts. Today, chokuto swords can be found in museums and private collections, showcasing their importance in early Japanese sword craftsmanship.
